Some bite problems cannot be solved by moving teeth alone, because the underlying issue is the position or size of the jaws themselves. Orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery repositions the jaws to restore both function and facial balance.

Conditions addressed

Protruding or receding lower jaw, open bite where the front teeth do not meet, significant facial asymmetry, gummy smile from vertical excess of the upper jaw, and residual jaw deformity following trauma or a cleft condition.

How treatment works

Treatment is usually staged in combination with orthodontics: braces first to align the teeth, then surgery to reposition the jaws, then a short finishing phase of orthodontics. Planning uses digital imaging and bite models so that the outcome is mapped out before surgery begins.

Beyond appearance, correction typically improves chewing, speech, breathing and long-term jaw joint health.

What treatment involves

Joint planning

Assessment with the orthodontist. Imaging, models and digital planning map the exact movement before anything begins.

Pre-surgical orthodontics

Braces align the teeth within each jaw first. The bite often looks worse during this phase — that is expected.

Surgery

The jaws are repositioned and fixed in the planned position, under general anaesthesia with a short hospital stay.

Finishing orthodontics

A short final phase settles the bite, followed by retainers.
