What to do right now

Find your situation below. These are first-aid steps only — they do not replace being seen.

Tooth knocked out Call immediately

Pick it up by the crown, never the root. Do not scrub or clean it. Keep it moist in milk or the patient's own saliva — not plain water. Get to the clinic within the hour if at all possible; that is when the chance of saving it is highest. Call on your way.

Facial or neck swelling Call immediately

Swelling that is spreading, swelling under the jaw or in the neck, fever with dental pain, or any difficulty swallowing or breathing is a medical emergency. Call immediately. If breathing is affected, go to a hospital emergency department right away.

Severe toothache

Take your usual painkiller as directed. Rinse gently with warm salt water. Avoid very hot or cold food. Do not place aspirin directly against the gum — it burns the tissue. Call for the earliest appointment.

Broken or chipped tooth

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Save any fragments and bring them with you. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for swelling. Avoid chewing on that side.

Jaw injury or locked jaw Call immediately

Support the jaw and avoid moving it. Apply a cold compress. If your teeth no longer meet correctly, or your lip or chin is numb after an injury, you may have a fracture — this needs assessment the same day.

Bleeding after an extraction

Bite firmly on clean gauze or a rolled handkerchief for 20 minutes without checking it repeatedly. Stay upright, avoid rinsing, spitting, smoking and hot drinks. If heavy bleeding continues beyond 30 minutes, call us.
