Learn MoreEmergency and reconstructive treatment for facial fractures and injuries to the jaws, cheekbones and orbit.
Craniofacial trauma covers injuries to the facial skeleton and soft tissues — most often from road accidents, falls, sports injuries and assaults. Prompt, correct treatment determines both how the face heals and how well the bite functions afterwards.
Fractures of the lower jaw (mandible), upper jaw (maxilla), cheekbone (zygoma), nose and eye socket (orbit); dislocated jaws; and facial soft tissue lacerations requiring careful aesthetic repair.
A facial fracture that heals in the wrong position leaves a lasting change in bite, chewing ability and facial symmetry, and is far harder to correct later. Assessment and fixation need a surgeon trained specifically in the facial skeleton.
For any facial injury, call the clinic directly rather than booking online, so the team can prepare for immediate assessment on arrival.
Not sure whether this applies to you? Call and describe the problem — we will tell you honestly.
Airway, bleeding and any head injury are checked first. Facial fractures are then assessed clinically and with imaging.
The correct bite is the reference point for the whole repair — fixing bone in the wrong position permanently changes how you chew.
Fractures are reduced and stabilised. Soft tissue lacerations are repaired with attention to the aesthetic result.
Diet is modified while bone heals, with regular reviews to confirm the bite and healing are correct.
As soon as possible. Facial fractures begin healing within days, and a fracture that sets in the wrong position is far harder to correct later. Call the clinic immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
Common signs are pain on opening or closing, teeth that suddenly do not meet properly, numbness of the lip or chin, swelling, and bleeding from the gums or ear. Any of these after an injury needs assessment.
